"Burkina Faso flies under the radar of even the most adventurous of travellers. For us, this was its greatest strength. There is no "checklist" tourism: as a result, wherever we went, and whatever we did, we were warmly welcomed, and able to share in the lives of the Burkinabe people.

We found ourselves sleeping amid sand dunes listening to desert blues guitar, sharing home-made beer under the shade of mango trees, getting stuck in a swamp while looking for hippos, and hobnobbing with the glitterati at film festival parties. There are a thousand and one more adventures to be had here, and all of them stay long after the flight home."

Authors Katrina Manson and James Knight are freelance journalists, writers and photographers, both with extensive experience of living, working and travelling in Africa. They work for Reuters news agency, the BBC, The Sunday Times, The Economist and Africa investor magazine amongst other publications and also run an African picture agency.
