With thorough coverage of the capital, Yerevan, and the highlights such as Selim caravanserai, the fortress of Smbataberd and the monastery of Noravank, it is the indispensable guide to a fascinating country. Practical details include visas, red tape, land border crossings and health & safety issues. Author's Note, by Nicholas Holding Updated 4th January, 2005 Most people don't know where Armenia is - actually it's in the Caucasus to the north of Iran and to the south of Georgia - but they are generally unwilling to admit that they don't know, at least when speaking to the author of a travel guide to the country. The first question they ask is usually "Is it safe?". The answer to that is that the low level of crime makes it a much safer country to visit than most. The capital, Yerevan, has a much lower incidence of street crime than do cities in western Europe or North America and, outside the capital, crime is a rarity. Don't be deterred by the unresolved conflict with neighbouring Azerbaijan: there has been a ceasefire since 1994 and there are no significant problems for visitors. The second question is "Why go?". Well, don't go for a beach holiday or a skiing holiday. Only go if you want to see a wealth of medieval buildings, many of them in extremely beautiful locations clinging to the steep sides of deep gorges, as well as amazing prehistoric henges and petroglyphs and some of the world's most beautiful stonecarving. In addition it has excellent potential for hiking, birdwatching and even caving. Also, the brandy is perhaps the world's finest: at least Winston Churchill thought so - and so do I. The third question is "How do you get there"? The easiest way is on British Airways three times weekly, non-stop, from Heathrow. (The flights are actually operated by British Mediterranean Airways which is a franchise of BA.) You can also fly from Vienna on Austrian Airlines or from Prague on Czech Airlines. . The last question is "Why did you write a guide book to Armenia?". That's easy: when my wife and I first visited Armenia, the absence of reliable practical information, guidance as to what was worth seeing, and descriptions of what one was looking at made us repeatedly exclaim in despair "What this country needs is a guide book!". When Bradt was looking for an author, I was keen to help other visitors and to encourage people to go by writing the guide which we wished had existed before our first visit. Nicholas Holding has travelled extensively in eastern Europe, pursuing his interest in its history, wildlife and religion. |
